Our Under 16 Boys suffered a heartbreaking defeat in their 'D' Shield Football Final against neighbours St. Peregrines in Blakestown yesterday afternoon.
Trailing 0-2 to 1-4 at half time the Gaels fought back to lead by 2 points at the 2nd water break stretching that to 3 points entering the final 5 minutes. In one of St. Peregrines few attacks of the second half a hopeful punt into the square was finished to the net and as heads dropped this was followed quickly by point and a further goal. The result was not a fair reflection of the match with Westmanstown taking the game to the opposition from the throw-in and, only for a high number of wides, would have been comfortable winners. This was the boys' final football game for the Gaels and a very disappointing way to end their years. There was a lot of emotion released at the end.
Hopefully the boys will pick themselves up and focus on our Hurling Championship decider versus Bohernabreena / St. Columba's at Westmanstown next Saturday.
Thank you to the Under 15 boys who supplemented our panel over the course of the season and thank you to the vocal support from the parents on the sideline. We hope you'll be out again in force on Saturday.
