Garda Westmanstown Gaels Minor Ladies beat Naomh Mearnóg 3.9 to 1.5 in a cracker of an away game, to claim the Div. 4 Football League title. The squad, heavily supported by U16 and three U15’s dynamos all played their socks off and delivered a wonderful win.
Megan in her last Minors game, ably captained her team. A bitterly cold day and a strong cross wind couldn't dampen the Gaels’ will to compete and desire to win. Despite lots of wides, cross bars and uprights, they kept their composure, stuck to the plan and fought for every ball, running out well deserved winners in a clean and competitive game.
The final whistle was a special moment for some of this squad who after 3yrs at minor level will be moving up to solely ladies senior football.
It's virtually impossible to pick a single Player of the Match,so we went for 2! Sophie Hickey; who gave a super brave performance between the posts shares this honour with Sinead Farrell; who was outstanding in her comeback game.
This incarnation of the team has had great success over the years they have been together. They have won several Leagues and Cups and also the Féile twice. They are a special group of young ladies; talented, dedicated and have been a joy to coach.
Today we saw huge talent on display by the u15 and u16 girls, the Minor team wouldn't have existed without them and, of course, the support of their coaches; Kevin, Ciaran, Shay & Declan. So a big thank you to them for their volunteerism, dedication, excellent coaching and collegiality.
The Senior Ladies’ combined training sessions have really strengthened our squad and we believe our girls’ game sense has improved no end from playing up with the more experienced ladies. So a big thanks for the excellent coaching to Jonny, Mick, Gill and Tommy.
Noting that the majority of our players have been involved since their nursery days, this Season’s success was for the ‘collective’, it was made possible by all efforts, interventions, summer camps, hassling, pushing and an overriding vision for excellence, by our Westmanstown "staff" led by Declan, Grace, Geraldine, Julie, Michael and all of our volunteers. Well done!
A great, great end to a fantastic season.
We would like to wish the six young ladies moving up all the best.
The future is bright for the Garda Westmanstown Gaels Girls and Ladies teams.
Thanks, of course, to all the parents and supporters. The photo shows happy kids, and what's more important?
Onwards and upwards for the Gaels!
