MATCH REPORT
It was not a favourable day for fast, free flowing hurling, as our U15 Hurlers ground out a hard fought, but ultimately well-deserved win over Wild Geese. Conditions from the outset were soft, and possession not easily won and the early signals were that this was going to be a close fought affair, and so it transpired.
A few early points were traded, with Darragh Burns and Sean Solan on target for the Gaels, when the Geese hit a cracking goal. After a long surging run, the sliotar was struck high into the net, leaving no chance for our valiant keeper Cian Lynch. On the stroke of half time, a well worked move up the wing gave Aidan Doyle the chance which he duly dispatched for a goal. Half time score of 1-5 to 1-3 in favour of the visitors.
Intensity levels, work rate, and sheer stubbornness was the order for the second half, as the damp hung heavy in the air. Possession was key, and every score was precious, and the opportunities were few. Tenacious defending, harassing and blocking kept the Geese in the coup for the 2nd half, with the defence and keeper playing their part, providing a platform for the midfield and attack to secure the scores needed. A goalmouth scramble resulted in an Ollie McCormack goal, and with 8 minutes to go, should have killed off the game as a contest, but credit to the opposition, they kept going, and goals were on their menu. With bodies on the goal line, on the ground, and just about everywhere else, blocking everything thrown at them, the young Gaels persevered, with Colm Murphy emerging with the ball from another ruck as the final whistle sounded.
A day for hard work and graft over silky skills, so massive credit to the boys. They showed that they can win ugly, when needed. Final Score 2-7 to 1-5. GAELS ABÚ!
